A new semester is underway at Albany State University. It began exclusively online on August 10, so that employees and students could still get back to business and stay safe at the same time. If you’re thinking of becoming a Golden Ram in the Spring 2021 semester—or you want to learn about a college that helps local residents achieve their dreams—here’s what you need to know.
A Quick History of Albany State University
Before the school was called “Albany State University,” it had a different name: Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute. Established in 1903, this historically African-American college was formed by Joseph Winthrop Holley. Several years later in 1917, it became the Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, a two-year school. It gained its current four-year college curriculum certification in 1932.
Additionally, a historical part of the Civil Right Movement took place in town: the Albany Movement. Students and Civil Rights figures, like Martin Luther King Jr., united to make a change. They aimed to achieve voting rights to all and to end segregation with non-violent protests. Still, more than 1,000 people were arrested during that time.
More recently in 2017, Albany State and Darton State College consolidated into one university. As of 2019, enrollment was at 6,122 students.
